EA’s Stance on Piracy (1985)

I thought this screenshot was interesting, showing a different side of EA before they started using evil hostile technologies such as those featured in their latest games (like Spore).

Although it could be argued if they the technology back then, they would probably use it.

Classic Google (from 2001!)

This is pretty awesome - to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Google has released a tool to let us do searches from 2001..

We dusted it off and took it for a spin, gobsmacked to see how different the web was in early 2001. “iPod” did not refer to a music player, “youtube” was nonsense, and if you were looking for “Michael Phelps,” chances are you meant the scientist, not the swimmer. “Wikipedia” was brand new.

Of coarse the search term “DARKCOLD” doesn’t take us here (in fact there’s only eight results, all irrelevant). Click here and give it a try for yourself.

For extra fun you could change the homepage of someone who uses Google to this and laugh as they wonder why they can’t find what they’re looking for.

Hidden Prehistoric Insects

This is pretty cool, they’ve discovered a way to look inside clumps of amber to see insects trapped for hundreds of millions of years. Now let’s hope they never bring them back to life, or it’ll be like some bad sci-fi movie.

It is like a magic trick - at first there is nothing and then it appears: a tiny insect unseen by any eye for 100 million years. We are with Paul Tafforeau who is scrolling through images on his computer. His pictures have been produced by a colossal X-ray machine that can illuminate the insides of small lumps of clouded amber (fossil tree resin).
