Cool Windows Technique - List Directories

Today I’m going to share a great technique I use all the time. Have you ever wanted to share a list of files in a folder on your computer (for example your music collection or documents) with somebody else but couldn’t find a better way than resorting to some shareware application which isn’t even compatible with the latest versions of Windows? As it turns out Windows (and possibly DOS though I’m not sure) has a useful command accessible through the Command Prompt. For those who are familar with the Command Prompt (formerly known as MS DOS) I won’t explain how to get to the folder you want, but for those who don’t know you do by:

In Windows XP and earlier click on start then run. In the run box type in cmd and hit enter. This will bring up a black box. Now you need to navigate to the folder you want to list. This is done by typing “cd ..” (without quotes) to keep dropping back a directory and “cd foldername” to enter a folder. You can type “dir” to view a list of folders if you’re not sure what it’ll be called, or you can type dir and hit tab a few times until the folder you want pops up next to the word cd. Once you’re in your folder that you want to list proceed to the step below the Vista instructions.

Running Windows Vista? That makes things a LOT easier. Microsoft added a cool feature which allows you to open the command prompt from any windows explorer folder. Open the folder you want to list, hold down shift (either one) on your keyboard and right click on some empty space. Click on “Open Command Window here”. Now it’s open and ready to create the list.

How to create the list of files? Just type in (without quotes) “dir > anythingyouwant.txt”. This will create a txt document in your folder with the name you specify.

Tutorial: Changing the transmission fluid and filter on many Holden Commodore models (VS, VT, VX, VY) with the 4L60E Automatic Gearbox

Whew, that’s a long title. This tutorial is going to show you how to change the transmission fluid and filter on a VS, VT, VX and VY Commodore which has the 4L60E automatic gearbox. It could potentially be similar for different cars within the GM family which feature the same 4L60E gearbox but since I can’t guarantee that I’ll just say it’s for the Commodore. Please note some things may be different for the VT and newer as my car is a VS, so please keep that in mind.

First up I’ll list the things required:

How to Install Windows Live Messenger 9 Beta (and Live Wave 3 applications) on Windows Server 2008 (and possibly 2003)

Microsoft decided to be evil and prevent the latest beta versions of Windows Live Messenger and the Live Wave 3 applications from installing on Windows Server 2008. I can understand why they made the decision (hell it’s a server class operating system, not something which typical users should be using) but I still found it annoying. I know there are great alternatives like aMSN but out of principle I figured out how to get the thing installed while running server 2008 x64 (and likely others), and I’ll share it with you.

First thing to do is download resource hacker (free tiny download). We’re going to use it to modify the installer (the only real thing stopping us here; the applications work fine).

Once in resource hacker, go to file -> open. Select the wlsetup-web.exe file (could possibly change later). Now in the left pane open up CONFIG -> CONFIG0 -> 0. Click on the text field in the right pane and hit control+F to search for “os productType” (without the quotation marks). It should now be selected. Simply change the word to the right of it from “workstation” to “server”. Now just above the right pane hit the “Compile Script” button. Now go to File -> Save.

Run the installer and it should work!

Tutorial: Converting your TV show DVDs to XViD (using DVD Decrypter & MediaCoder)

An old article now but it might still be useful.

Introduction

In this tutorial I’m going to go through how to convert an episode of a TV show from a DVD into an XViD file for archival purposes or to just save space. The process seems daunting at first, but it’s actually quite easy once you know what you’re doing. The method I’m going to teach only involves three applications as well, and they’re all free! For this tutorial I’ll be working with the TV show Charmed (for my former girlfriend), as I didn’t have any of my own to do at the time.
