An application to make me think twice about the iPhone - REV

I’ve always had a dim view about the iPhone, that is until now! DevToaster has created REV, an application that allows one to plug the iPhone (and presumably the iPod touch) into a car capable of outputting OBDII and displays information such as revs, km/h, airflow meters, fuel ratio and much more. If they make it compatible with Holdens (specifically the VS V6) then it might be enough to push me to upgrade handsets.

We’re not able to use it just yet as an OBDII -> WLAN interface is required but given time that will be available. Sure beats having to plug a notebook in through the USB cable (though carputers are awesome). Give the creators website a visit to find out more.

Nintendo’s Darkest Day - Backup Launcher Homebrew Leaked

This has to be a sad day for Nintendo. For the first time ever, people are able to play copied (or backed-up) games on a Nintendo console with nothing more than a game they can rent from the video shop (how I installed the homebrew channel) and a $10 SD card.

It’s all possible because of a well known exploit in the game Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which when a hacked savegame copied from the SD Card to the Wii’s system memory and loaded in game, causes the console to crash and allow Homebrew software to run. Word had it there was a loader in development but nothing had hit the internet - until now. The software released is buggy, in beta and the amount of effort involved to get things working seems too great. Of coarse given time things will change and everything will be easier - still, this is enough to stop certain people from purchasing original titles who would have otherwise paid for them (due to the cost and availability of a modchip). This is however good news for those who want to make real backups or be able to try a game properly before forking over the cash.

This leak will likely have negative effects on the development of the software, as it was a self-rightous beta tester who is responsible for it being available.

You can download it via GBAtemp and read more at MaxConsole.

Cheap Media Center - XBOX & XBMC

I’ve posted about this before but thought I would just make a new post for those not in the know. Did you know the original XBOX (the black one released in 2003) can, with a simple (and free) modification to allow it to run homebrew (unauthorized software), be used as one of the cheapest and most versatile media center boxes.

Remember the XBOX?

Symbian S60v3 Hacked Open

Owners of most modern Nokia phones rejoice! Symbian s60v3 (OS 9.1/9.2) has recently been hacked open allowing modification to the code. At the moment there’s no custom firmwares, the changes are being done in memory (meaning after a reboot everything should fix itself) using software. Being so new there’s only a handful of patches in existence at this time; proof of concept, ability to bypass the need for signing (:D), unlocking all sorts of strange things in the menus (I found a menu item with no text that when selected caused the current phonecall to vanish completely, still in the call but it’s like there’s no call), allowing access to private data in the ROM/system memory and changing the product code (can’t use this to update the firmware though, just for fun). The first tricks to utilize hacked firmware allows us to change where the phone looks for the start-up sound, from rom to the writeable system storage (C:\), meaning we can have any start-up MP3 we want, another allowing the change of the start-up animation. Expect much more to come!

You can follow the latest developments and attempt to do this yourself by heading over to IPMart Forums (registration required but well worth it).
