Play DooM (Ultimate, 2, Final) on Vista/Server 2008

Have you recently had the urge to play the original DooM on Windows Vista? I bet you have, and if you’ve tried I bet you got a plethora of incompatability messages. The reason is the original DooM executables were coded for MS-DOS and as such simply won’t run. The solution is to use a port. I hadn’t used a port in a few years (Legacy was my preference back then) so had to do a bit of research to see which one was still being actively updated. ZDoom it is then.

I like ZDoom because it has a lot of advanced features like a crosshair, mouselook and wheel support, 16:9 resolutions and heaps more. Too many to list, in fact. Check out their website here to learn more and download it. Note you need the original or shareware WAD files.

omfg, zdoom. man, i used zdoom way back, was friggin awesome. used it on an old dx66 [D][I][G][I][T][A][L] laptop, with trackball mouse, over null modem cable on serial port with my mates!!

(speaking of serial cables, i remember loading internet explorer 5 i think it was with hyperterminal onto the laptop to be able to use a plugin for geoshell!!, damn that took forever)

  • Serial’s not all bad though, some cool things can be done like flashing Motorola cable modem firmware.. true the speed is unacceptable though.. *memories to a 36.6k dial up modem running through serial*

We’re lucky with zdoom and still being able to play these classics (thank you id for releasing the source), but there are some which I can’t get working like Carmageddon 2 :(
